Adobe Photoshop

Photoshop needs no introduction, so I'll get down to the nitty gritty.

While there is no linux version of photoshop you do have a number of options for accessing photoshop from within linux.

One of the most common is to run photoshop using wine, an implementation of the windows libraries which runs natively on linux (and unix-like systems). Versions from 6.0 through to CS2 work well (though I've only tested 7.0 and CS2). You can find details on people's experience with the various versions here. There are also reports of CS3 working for some people. Photoshop is very responsive under wine, and this is probably your best option for using photoshop on linux. The CS2 page on wine's application database includes a howto for setting up CS2 under wine.

There are two other options, which apply generally to using software from other operating systems under linux. They are virtualization/emulation and remote desktop. We won't discuss specifics here as they are the same regardless of which non-linux application you use to run there.
